Historical Background

According to oral and written traditions, the progenitor of Ihima is Onotu. He is one of the six children of Itaazi Atanuje, the Father and ancestor of Egbira-Tao speaking people of Kogi State.

While leaving the history of how the Egbira-Tao people, along with their kith and kin of the Igala kingdom, migrated from Kwararrafa in the far North to Idah in Igala land before coming to live in her present country to those who deal with the historical background of Egbira as a whole, it will suffice to trace the migration of the Egbira Tao people from Idah to their present habitation. Legend has it that after briefly settling down in Idah in the present day Igala Kingdom, there arose an Ata Idah by the name of Ayegba who became tyrannical and introduced the Igala policy of Assimilation making Igala, a principal Court Language, the Lingua Franca. This did not go down well with the other two half brothers, Ohimi and Itaazi, thus paving the way for their peaceful separation with Itaazi Atanuje sailing across River Niger with his party to settle down in their present location.

Closely related to this history is the other account that which stated that while Igala people chose a certain powerful woman to become the first Ata (Ohinoyi) of the new settlement, Idah, Ohimi and Itaazi who prepared a patriarchal and republican society decided to break away from the tribal tripod of Ohimi and Itaazi on one hand and Igala on the other.

To do this, they shared the ancestral relics among themselves. While Igala was left to install a female as their monarch, Itaazi and his lineage chose Eku cult which two of his children, Ododo and Obaji, later premiered in Itaazi’s new Country home at Okehi in Egbira Opete as his half brother, Ohimi carried the ancestral slit drum called Agidibo-Ohikwu. The famous drum is still in Koto karfi till today. The separation was done peacefully.

Ihima: A Derivative Name

The name “Ihima” is derived from the exclamation “Ihi mi ma!”. When the three other sons of Itaazi of the same mother,  Adaviriku (Adavi), Uga(Okengwen) and Onotu, migrated from Idah to Egbira Opete, Adavi as the eldest was said to have settled in the present day Adavi Odu while Okenwen settled on the hill of the present day Okenwen which was initially called Okenwen Ehi. The other brothers then advised their youngest brother, Onotu, to proceed to the high hill in Ikuehi and settle on top in order to serve as sentry to the others in case of an approaching warlike people. Upayi, the mother of Ebira Tao people, was said to have exclaimed; Ihi mi ma! Meaning, when did I give birth to him that you want to use him as a guard against war-mongers. It was this exclamation that was shortened to ‘Ihima’ which has stuck to this day.

The Nupe/Fulani Jihads of the 19th Century

Tracing the history of the early settlement of the Egbira Tao people, Sarki Idris Enesi’ s book, “Ebira History (1400 – 2020) asserts that the 18th century wars were fought by the Nupe/Fulani Jihads of the 19th century against Egbira in which the Egbira people came out victorious. The victory of the Egbira was traceable to the spiritual roles of ‘Ori-Ihima’ (Ihima deity) which was said to have mysteriously released bees from the Ori-Ihima hill which attacked and drove away the jihadists anytime they approached to attack the Egbira people. Also worthy of mentioning were the roles of  Ochado Osansan, Ajoge, Otomoreku among other Ihima warriors such as Aje and Anyogo.

The battle field against the Hausa/Fulani Jihadists took place in Ihima. It is named ‘Ete Ireku’ meaning the ground on which the war was fought. The name exists till date and it is on this land that the present Ihima Community Secondary School (re-christened Ihima Science Secondary School) is situated.

The war referred to above was the popular ‘Ireku Ajinomoh’ in Ebira oral traditions and the hill in which the Ori Ihima resides was the Okehi hills with its forest serving as the fortress where the Egbira warriors were launching their defenses.
